ONI DEMON

This is a character from the Feudal Japan challenge from Artstation.

Why I chose this concept:

-The character has interesting shapes such as the mask and armour, figuring out how these shapes work and connect with each other I want to try to get that concept to work in a 3D space.
-As the concept only shows one view, it allows me to have creative freedom on the parts that you don't see in the illustration.

Problem-solving:
-I've made it so the mask goes way past his ears, which gives more depth to the big horns
-The belt rope is tied with a knot at the back (yet to be implemented), this I believe will give a more interesting silhouette
-I believe his hair originates from his head and flows freely out. I will be trying to do this with alpha cards.

Making Rope

I decided that using an IMM brush (Insert multi-mesh brush) would be great to create rope and would allow me to experiment with different shapes to get various styles of rope as the character seems to 2 styles of rope.

I first started out creating the twisted shape of the rope but making sure that it's tileable vertically as it would need to link on from itself.  I then made the shape into an IMM brush but at this stage, it would only just insert the simple mesh. I needed to get it to curve which you can set through the Stroke menu and then through the Brush menu you allow it to connect to each other creating the rope.

Using the Deformation menu we can inflate the sculpt so that it looks more like rope and from there we added noise to get the detail of the fibres of the rope.
